Getting There It was with much regret that we left our hotel, Starfish Tobago, to head for the tiny airport where we would catch a plane for the 10-minute hop across to Port of Spain. We had spent a very pleasant 5 days on the island and you can read what we got up to in part 1 of the trip report here. We arrived in Port of Spain just before lunchtime and we were soon in a taxi and heading towards our hotel, L’Orchadié. The route into the city came in from the hill tops which…

Lisbon - A Stromfield Experience

Image
Hotel The Independente Suites and Terrace £177 for 1 room for 2 nights  Verdict: 9/10 In Bairro Alto.  The building and decor were quite fantastic, a typical 1900s facade and a room with a similar look including proper wooden shutters an old style desk.  The bed was comfortable, it was quiet and the lovely shower had refillable shampoo and shower gel bottles. This was all topped off with a tiny old lift to get us up to the 3rd floor and a standard breakfast with the extras  included in our price (smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels etc)

Food($ = cheap, $$ = moderate, $$$ = expensive) Pasteis de nata, Belém $ snacks Verdict: 7/10 the setting in the oldest pasteis shop in Lisbon is gorgeous and the decor filled with blue and white tiles and massive rooms to accommodate a huge amount of visitors. We were seated quickly and the pasteis de nata was delicious but the other tapas were a bit so so.

Decadente $$ dinner Verdict: 7/10 this was a part of the hotel and downstairs.  It was really busy wi…

Castle Day - Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in Bavaria

Image
Deep in Bavaria there is the legend of the ‘Fairytale King’ and his amazing castles, fortunately this isn’t a myth and the buildings are real.  Neuschwanstein is such a beautifully constructed and aesthetically pleasing building, it has captured imaginations and instagram posts from visitors the world over.  After a couple of years of looking at these posts we booked a flight (about £70 pp return from Heathrow with BA to Munich) and on 18th February 2019 we woke up in the Hotel Schlosskrone full of excitement that ‘castle day’ had finally arrived. We stayed in Füssen which is a gorgeous little town close to  the castle. In February with the lingering snow it was relatively tourist free,  I can imagine in the warmer months this may not be the case.It is possible to see the castles on a  day trip from Munich, which is a 2 hour train ride from Füssen, but we decided we wanted as full experience as possible.  So, after breakfast we hopped on a bus and just 10 minutes later we were in Schwan…

Getting There We had never done a trip over the Christmas period before but we decided that the combination of a stack of Avios points, a BA companion voucher, and the chance of some winter sun was too good an opportunity to pass up. We decided that a week in the small sun-kissed island nation of Trinidad and Tobago would do nicely.  We nearly didn’t make it away at all as in the days leading up to our departure Gatwick had seen severe disruption due to malicious drone flight…
